How a Water Softener Works

A water softener removes the minerals -- mainly calcium and magnesium -- that make water "hard." Water flows through a tank filled with resin beads that swap out the hard minerals for sodium. The system periodically regenerates itself by flushing the beads with salt water. You just need to add salt to the tank every few weeks.
